Handmade Jewelry. Joyería artesanal

The long, complicated process of designing and producing a piece of handmade jewelry begins with a drawing, usualy in pencil, sepia, or watercolor. The craftman’s job is to produce, as precisely as possible, the design he has been given. According to the design, he hammers, cut out, files and shapes the metal which form the base of the work. Upon this base, he next solders whatever ornamentation is requiered. These ornaments are first modeled in wax, then molded and cast in gold or other metal, and finally chased and finished.

The disadvantages of totally handmade jewelry are obvious. The tremendous amount of time required to create a single piece results in rather prohibitive costs, especially when the raw materials are expensive to begin with. Another disadvantage is the impossibility of attaining perfect  symetry within the piece, although many consider this characteristic of handmade jewelry as part of its beauty.

For all these reasons, for years we have opted for computer-aided design, because it means a cheapening of the cost of the piece, and in addition, we are able to offer customers a picture of the order before making thejewel, giving an opportunity of modifying the jewel to suit their taste.

El proceso largo y complicado de diseñar y producir una pieza de joyería hecha a mano comienza con un dibujo, generalmente a lápiz, sepia, o la acuarela. El trabajo del artesano es reproducir con la mayor precisión posible, el diseño que se le ha dado.De acuerdo con el diseño, el joyero lo amartilla,  lo corta y da forma al metal que forma la base de la obra. Sobre esta base, se suelda las ornamentaciones que la pieza requiera. Estos ornamentos primer son  modelados en cera, moldeados y luego fundidos en oro u otro metal, y, finalmente, acabado.

Las desventajas de la joyería hecha totalmente  a mano son obvias. La enorme cantidad de tiempo necesario para crear una pieza única a costes prohibitivos, sobre todo cuando las materias primas son caras. Otra desventaja es la imposibilidad de lograr una simetría perfecta dentro de la pieza, aunque muchos consideran que esta característica de la joyería hecha a mano es parte de su belleza.

Es por todas estas razones,que  desde hace años nosotros hemos  apostado por el diseño asistido por ordenador, ya que ello comporta un abaratamiento del coste de la pieza y el poder ofrecer a los clientes una foto de la pieza antes de realizarla, dandole la oportunidad de modificar la pieza para ajustarla a su gusto.
